December 18, 2018

If you’re catching up with your couch this winter, these 2018 releases have arrived on digital and home video to help you retreat physically, while keeping your mind and heart fully engaged. Some are limited to the U.S. for now…

Matangi / Maya / M.I.A. just won an IDA Award for Best Music Documentary and is now available on iTunes in the U.S., U.K., and Canada. Far from your average celebrity biopic, the M.I.A. documentary is an intimate chronicle of the experiences and drives behind the pop star and activist’s unlikely rise to fame, and her clashes with the media, composed largely of footage she shot herself over 20 years. M.I.A. also just released a homemade, never-before-seen video for her 2004 song “Reload” for fans of the film.

Shirkers is one of those rare films that we can proudly say is available GLOBALLY right now. You can find it on Netflix wherever you are. What teenager hasn’t fantasized about shooting an independent film with their friends? With the “help” of their American mentor George, Sandi Tan and her friends did just that on the streets of Singapore. At least that’s what they thought they were doing, until the true story behind their filmmaking adventure took a mysterious and devastating turn. Keep an eye out for Shirkers at the 2019 Independent Spirit Awards, where it is nominated for Best Documentary.

We the Animals weaves a visually and emotionally immersive story of the raw, fierce, love between three brothers tearing their way through a volatile childhood in upstate New York. Now on iTunes,  DVD, Blu-ray and VOD platforms, this film, adapted from the beloved novel by Justin Torres, has been lauded for how it elevates, but never oversimplifies, its portrayal of complex family dynamics strained by financial hardship. This five-time Independent Spirit nominee is popping up on many a year-end-favorite list. The film’s soundtrack is out now, too.

Sorry to Bother You has been called “bonkers” (in a good way) more times than we can count. It’s hard to categorize a film that makes its own rules and still keeps audiences along for the terror-meets-hilarity rollercoaster ride with its morally conflicted, “power-calling” antihero. See it on iTunesDVD & Blu-ray plus VOD, Hulu and other platforms.

In Night Comes On, young Angel ages out of juvenile detention at 18 with a mission: to avenge her mother’s death at the hands of her father, without dragging her little sister, Abby, into it. Meanwhile the sharp and loyal Abby has other plans in mind. Available on iTunesDVD and VOD, this film was celebrated upon its Sundance premiere for the sensitivity and compassion of its central, sister relationship. Dominque Fishback and Tatum Marilyn Hall make it unforgettable with the power and tenderness of their dynamic portrayals.

Monsters and Men will be released January 8th, but you can pre-buy it now on Blu-ray, DVD and digital. Three independent lives orbit the same police shooting of an unarmed black man in this gripping and deeply empathetic ensemble film. The kinetic performances from the three sets of characters, whose lives lightly touch yet are inextricably linked, create a tensely moving story-world. This film begs essential questions and astutely evades easy answers.
