Traditional Q&As with filmmakers make festival screenings feel personal, but audiences at True/False also get an experience that’s even more intimate and unfiltered at the annual “Campfire Stories” event.

As captured by this episode of the True/False podcast on KBIA Radio, this past April’s festival brought a handful of filmmakers around a fake but atmospheric fire to spin some yarns. The four speakers we hear also happen to be recipients of Cinereach support! Viktor Jakovleski (Brimstone & Glory), Peter Nicks (The Force), Dan Sickles (Dina) and Sabaah Folayan (Whose Streets?) get personal, philosophical, and poetic about their work. They also offer fascinating tangents that have nothing (and everything) to do with filmmaking.

Viktor Jakovleski goes head-to-horns with a 30-foot bull made of wire, paper mâché and fireworks; Peter Nicks has some unexpected reckonings with personal history and independent film; an encounter in a mall parking lot sparks creative evolution for Dan Sickles; and Sabaah Folayan remembers how grit and kismet merged to make her a filmmaker instead of a doctor.

Whether or not you’ve seen these four new films, the campfire stories their makers tell are a fascinating window into how life becomes narrative.
